A learner finishes several months of training — visibly more capable in meetings, more confident on a call, quicker with an email in English — and yet their proficiency level reads exactly the same as the day they started. The progress is real. The label just doesn’t show it.

A study Bridge recently co-published with Pearson, built on the Global Scale of English (GSE), set out to make that hidden progress visible. The findings change how organizations can think about the return on language training.

Why proficiency labels tell only part of the story

Broad proficiency frameworks like the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), are useful shorthand. They give everyone — learners, teachers, and HR teams — a common reference point. But a single level covers a wide band of ability. A learner can spend months growing in vocabulary, accuracy, fluency, and confidence while remaining, on paper, exactly where they began.

For a team trying to show that a program is working, that gap between real progress and visible progress is the whole challenge. It’s hard to justify continuing or expanding an investment when the headline number hasn’t moved — even though the people in the program clearly have.

What an independent study found

In partnership with Pearson, Bridge analyzed learner data from its professional English programs across two cohorts of working adults in Southern and Central America, spanning industries from mining to financial services. The study combined three kinds of evidence: digital learning analytics, a pre-and-post AI speaking assessment, and satisfaction surveys of learners, teachers, and HR leaders.

Two results stand out. First, learners demonstrated strong command of the material — averaging roughly 89% mastery of course content across skills. Second, and most importantly, the GSE made progress visible even when CEFR labels stayed put. Nearly half of one cohort remained at the same CEFR level by the end of the program, yet the finer GSE scale showed they were still moving forward. Forty-five percent moved up at least one CEFR level over the course of their program.

In other words: the progress was there all along. It just needed a measurement detailed enough to see it.

Measurement that points to the next action

Because the GSE describes ability on a more granular scale, it does more than record a score — it shows where to focus next. In the study, teachers could see whether a learner needed support specifically in pronunciation, discourse, or vocabulary range, rather than offering general feedback and hoping it landed.

That precision is what turns measurement into better instruction. It also gives HR and L&D teams a clearer story to tell the business: not just that training is happening, but where it is making a difference and who is ready for more.

Progress rewards time, not shortcuts

One of the study’s clearest findings was also one of its most practical. Among the factors examined, the strongest predictor of progress was simply how long learners stayed in the program — each additional month was associated with measurable GSE gains. Live instruction and digital practice both contributed, but sustained participation over months mattered most.

The takeaway for organizations is straightforward. Durable language growth comes from consistent programs with room to practice and consolidate — not from compressed crash courses. When a program is built to run over months, with spacing and reinforcement designed in, learners keep building on what they’ve gained instead of losing it.

From attendance to outcomes

For a long time, the only easily trackable metric in language training was attendance. Did employees show up? Did they complete their hours? Those numbers are easy to count, but they say very little about whether anyone is actually communicating better at work.

The study points to a more useful question: not “Did employees attend?” but “What measurable progress are they making, and how do we act on it?” That shift — supported by data HR teams can share internally — is what makes language training easier to justify, easier to continue, and easier to expand.

See the progress that’s already happening

Progress is happening in your teams’ language programs, whether or not a proficiency label reflects it yet. The opportunity is to make it visible — and to build a program around what your business actually needs.

That starts with knowing where your workforce stands today. Request a LinguaMap™ to map proficiency by role and team, and design a program built to show measurable progress from day one.

Anyone responsible for a workplace language program has seen it happen.
