Currently in Mexico, she teaches classes to kids with a Russia-based online ESL school. She paints a picture of what it&#8217;s like to travel the world <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/teach-english-online-from-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teaching English online<\/a>, the advantages of teaching as a non-native English speaker, and her strategies for building rapport with young learners.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you tell us a bit about yourself, Anzhela?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m originally from Russia, but I consider myself an international person \u2014 a digital nomad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been traveling for the past 11 years and I\u2019m currently in Mexico, but I\u2019ll travel back to Russia soon because I have another trip coming up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I earned my master\u2019s degree in tourism and hospitality at the Saint Petersburg State University of Technology and Design. Then, I started to travel with different types of contracts when I was 19 years old. I\u2019ve tried many different jobs&nbsp;\u2014 animation, entertainment, tourism, and the restaurant business \u2014 depending on which country I traveled to. The purpose was always traveling. That is my passion and way of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When and how did you get into the teaching field?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The COVID-19 crisis came and clipped my wings and earnings. I suffered from inner drama thinking about how to change my life and quickly realized I\u2019m proficient in the English language, which came to me naturally during my travels. I enrolled myself for a second diploma at Bridge and graduated with an <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\/online\/idelt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDELT<em>Online<\/em> certification<\/a> along with additional course certifications. That\u2019s how my story began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I teach online for a Russian school at the moment, but I plan to gain experience and either jump into international teaching opportunities or <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/get-started-freelance-english-teaching-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">become a freelance teacher<\/a>. I enjoy teaching a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-medium wp-image-28499\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-21-04-21-01-45-1-1-768x1024-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Anzhela while traveling in Mexico\" class=\"wp-image-28499\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Anzhela while traveling in Mexico<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did you decide to become a digital nomad?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital nomadism is a new phase of my life after previously traveling with contracts. For 10 years I was a nomad, and now I\u2019ve added \u2018digital\u2019 to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I find it extremely beautiful and fulfilling to be able to travel the world with no boundaries. Well, just one \u2014 the necessity of a good Internet connection. It grew my wings back and now it\u2019s even better \u2014 I only need my computer and my little plush rabbit Lily, which my pupils love a lot! Complete freedom, that\u2019s how I can describe the reason for this choice. It\u2019s very addictive, so to speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/teach-english-online-digital-nomad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here&#8217;s a guide on how to teach English online as a digital nomad.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which countries have you traveled to?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, I\u2019ve been to 46 countries, and in May I have my 47th coming up. I\u2019ve traveled to countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, and Central America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s the best thing about being a digital nomad?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Freedom of choice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ability to wake up to the sun anytime, to explore new places, to meet great, like-minded people, and to encounter different minds who teach you a lot.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ability to grow and widen your mind, feed your soul, and actually taste life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/reasons-become-online-english-teacher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Find out the other reasons to teach English online.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which part of Mexico are you currently staying in and what is that place like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve traveled a bit in Mexico and chose to stay in Playa del Carmen. It\u2019s a very lovely, colorful town on a beach full of energy and expats. It feels like home here. I came for three weeks but decided to stay for three months because I fell for this place, this beautiful destination from which to escape the Russian winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do you like most about teaching while in Mexico?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Actually, it\u2019s my schedule that I enjoy the most. Because of the time difference between Russia and Mexico (eight hours), I wake up super early with the sunrise here, and by noon I\u2019m free to enjoy the rest of the day. That\u2019s the best part. My students are kids from five to 12 years old. It\u2019s actually very new for me. I thought I wasn\u2019t going to start doing this because I\u2019m not a native English speaker and lack of experience might be an obstacle. I think it was a lack of confidence until I began to realize that being non-native actually gives me an advantage. I mean, ask me to teach you Russian and I wouldn\u2019t know how. But I\u2019ve learned English, I know the struggle, and I know how to teach English because I\u2019ve walked in the shoes of my pupils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/advantages-non-native-english-speaking-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read about the advantages of teaching EFL as a non-native English speaker.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do you like to do when you\u2019re not working?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I usually explore new things and places. I\u2019m very curious and passionate about learning something new. My eyes are always craving new scenery, and my mind is thirsty for new knowledge. I like to take long walks, excursion trips, or even just read a good book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are your favorite teaching strategies or activities for teaching kids?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I use <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/what-is-tpr-for-teaching-english-and-how-can-i-use-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Total Physical Response (TPR)<\/a> a lot \u2014 sometimes I feel like I\u2019m an animator more than an actual teacher!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My plush rabbit Lily helps me a lot, and all my pupils have their friends to bring to our lessons. It breaks the ice. I prefer to be their friend \u2014 they have a lot of strict teachers at school, why would they need another one? We become close very fast. I speak with the parents quite often, which makes them want to keep their kids with me, and my pupils&nbsp;eventually share with me very personal things, which I adore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I try to take an individual approach to each kid and not just follow the program in the platform. So far, I\u2019m succeeding. My pupils immediately understand my instructions and respond, and they start reading from scratch and improve their study points. It brings me so much joy that I wouldn\u2019t have ever thought possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\/micro\/teaching-online-games-young-learners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Taking a short Micro-credential course helps you develop more games and activities for teaching English online to kids.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You took the <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\/online\/idelt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDELT<em>Online<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;course and specialized certificate courses in <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\/specialized\/teaching-english-online\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teaching English Online<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\/specialized\/teaching-english-online-freelancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teaching Online as a Freelancer<\/a>. Why did you decide to take these courses?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I took these <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/how-does-online-tefl-certification-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online teaching courses<\/a> for a deeper understanding of the field. It actually helped. I thought I knew enough after my IDELT<em>Online<\/em> diploma, but the additional online courses were also helpful and interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to say an enormous thank you to my tutor, Terry McLean, who guided me throughout the course. She believed I could do this and gave me so many insights and so much knowledge. I\u2019ll be always grateful for her being my mentor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/tutors-and-instructors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get to know all of the Bridge course tutors and instructors!<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did these courses help you professionally?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer is super simple: Without them, I wouldn\u2019t be able to teach. The world is very uncertain now. In May, I will go to Greece. This summer, I\u2019ll most likely be in Russia, in my gorgeous Saint Petersburg. When autumn comes, I\u2019ll think about my next step. The only thing is I don\u2019t like the cold. Winter is something I\u2019ve always tried to avoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Travelers have no fixed plans, I believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you have any advice for an English teacher who wants to become a digital nomad?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just one piece of advice: Go for it! There\u2019s nothing to fear but fear itself. Life outside your comfort zone is too beautiful, and the world is too big to stay in one place.
