If you live in your home country, speak your native language most of the time, and go to English classes a few hours a week, your learning is called EFL. One example could be a young adult in China whose first language is Mandarin and who takes English lessons during the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that same Chinese student learns English in the United States, then the learning is considered ESL, or English as a Second Language. This second acronym refers to learning English in a country where English is the first language for the majority of the population.
