She launched and grew her own virtual English teaching business as she traveled. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I come from Johnson City, a small town in Tennessee. I haven&#8217;t lived there in a long time, so I give a long-winded answer when someone asks me where I&#8217;m from. We then took a gap year: we quit our jobs in Beijing, put all of our stuff into storage, and traveled for 14 months straight. That gap year gave us our first experience of the digital nomad life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We expected to return to normal life and regular full-time jobs afterward, but two weeks in, we realized how hard it is to give up the freedom that comes with traveling full-time. So we worked for a year in Kunming, China, saved money, and prepared for what came next. We then moved to Bali and lived on the island for about nine months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I found a job <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/elt-marketplaces-for-global-english-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teaching English online<\/a> while we were living in Bali. Sasha and I are both huge fans of live music, and we met at a music festival. If you&#8217;re learning about choosing a niche, take the time to work through the niche-selection or market research resources before moving on. If you&#8217;re working on your offer, actually start planning your product and pricing.<\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t need to have your entire teaching business figured out before you start. Why did you decide to take these courses?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I earned my initial <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online TEFL certification<\/a> from Bridge while I was living in China. Bridge later introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\/specialized\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Specialized Certification<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\/micro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Micro-credential<\/a> courses, and those excited me because continuing your <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/professional-development-for-esl-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professional development as an ESL teacher<\/a> really matters. I had always wanted to teach Business English and IELTS test prep, so I took those two courses. You have to think not only about where you are now, but also about where your students are and where you&#8217;re going next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I&#8217;m planning travel, I always look at the time difference before committing to my schedule. Sometimes a class that happens at a perfectly reasonable time in one country becomes very early in the morning or late at night in another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also helps not to move too quickly. Staying somewhere for a few weeks or months makes it much easier to maintain a routine than changing locations every few days. That is part of why we set up a home base in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Traveling from there gives us more stability while still letting us move around quite a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flexibility and planning both matter. I did it for years. I started teaching English online while we were living in Bali, and my husband and I have been digital nomads since 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, working remotely while traveling is not the same as being on vacation. You still have students expecting you to show up for class, so you need to plan your travel around your work commitments.
