For example, a colleague who observes your speaking lesson might notice that you answer your own questions before students have time to respond. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That observation suggests a specific change: you wait a few seconds longer after each question. Your students also benefit when you adjust your lessons based on what you observe in class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"2-reflection-improves-your-lesson-plans\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reflection improves your lesson plans<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reflective teaching helps you become a better teacher: you engage your students more and consistently improve your <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/free-esl-lesson-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lesson plans<\/a>. You can measure your success by analyzing different aspects of your lessons, like <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/what-is-ttt-when-teaching-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teacher talking time<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/collaborative-learning-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">student collaboration<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, you might remember that students weren\u2019t engaged during an activity. You can then analyze the reasons and find out you didn\u2019t set a clear context, or you over-explained and delayed <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/guided-discovery-for-esl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learners&#8217; guided discovery<\/a>. You reuse the same tried-and-tested activities and tell the same anecdotes. You also repeat the same grammar explanations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reusing activities is great, but make sure they don\u2019t feel boring to you. Working at a language school makes this easy, but you can also collaborate online through Facebook groups and LinkedIn. Reflective teaching also helps you continue developing and expanding your teaching skills throughout your career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reflecting on your teaching also lets you remember training from <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TEFL courses<\/a> you\u2019ve already taken. You can check your old notes and see whether you\u2019re fully applying what you studied in your lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your reflections can show you which skills to develop next. Look for problems that appear in several journal entries or in your notes. Groups like Bridge\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/bridge.teo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teaching English Online<\/a> on Facebook are a great place to share your own teaching experience and also see what other teachers have been doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll be surprised to see how many teachers have had the same experiences as you or will have suggestions on how to teach in new ways. Sharing your reflections lets you offer and receive great feedback, and it also builds your network or <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/esl-community-of-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">community of teachers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/set-yourself-apart-as-an-english-teacher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Already part of a TEFL community?
