If you\u2019re interested in teaching English overseas, applying when schools are hiring the most teachers will substantially increase your chances of getting hired. Here are the peak TEFL hiring seasons in some of the most popular teach abroad regions and countries around the world.<\/p>\n<p><em>Want to skip right to this data for a particular country? Check out our<a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/teaching-english-abroad\/jobs-at-a-glance\">\u00a0Jobs at a Glance Chart<\/a> for a quick look at hiring seasons, teaching requirements, salary, and other info for countries around the world. <\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Latin America<\/h2>\n<p>Some countries in Latin America have a high demand for English teachers year-round, while others hire the majority of the teachers they\u2019ll need at the beginning of the academic year.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Mexico <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The TEFL hiring season in <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/jobs\/teach-english-in-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mexico<\/a> tends to be year-round but the time from Christmas to the middle of January is a holiday for most schools here, so be sure to apply before or after this time.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Central America<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2600\" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cr.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"556\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cr.jpeg 556w, https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cr-480x360.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 556px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/what-is-is-like-to-teach-english-in-costa-rica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Caitlyn, second from left, English teacher in Costa Rica\u00a0<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a popular teaching country such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/jobs\/teach-english-in-costa-rica\/\">Costa Rica<\/a>, it\u2019s possible to get hired by a language school virtually anytime. However, there are two main hiring seasons for Costa Rica and other countries in this region, such as Nicaragua and Panama. The primary hiring months are in the summer, between June and August. The second-best time to get hired in Central America is in January.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>South America <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Some countries in South America hire year-round, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/jobs\/teach-english-in-peru\/\">Peru<\/a>. However, in most of the continent, language schools start hiring around February or March. Demand for teachers usually remains high until August, then declines. Keep in mind that in countries in the southern hemisphere (which is most of South America), the months of December and January are actually summer, so not many schools are looking to hire teachers during this time.<\/p>\n<h2>Asia<\/h2>\n<p>If you plan to teach at a <em>language school<\/em> in Asia, you\u2019ll find that there are teaching jobs available in most countries year-round! Apply as early as February for jobs that will start in August or September. Apply as early as August for positions starting in spring.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Japan<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The school terms in <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/jobs\/teach-english-in-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan<\/a> start in the spring and fall, so if you want to teach in a K-12 setting, it\u2019s good to apply a few months before these start dates.<\/p>\n<p>The popular <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/jet-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JET program<\/a>, which places assistant teachers in public and private schools in Japan, starts accepting applications in September for placements in July and August.<\/p>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2594\" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/taiwan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"565\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/taiwan.jpg 565w, https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/taiwan-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 565px, 100vw\" \/><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/interview-with-richard-blanke-bridgetefl-alumnus-teaching-in-taiwan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Richard, English teacher in Taiwan<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Taiwan<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Language schools in <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/jobs\/teach-english-in-taiwan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taiwan<\/a> hire year-round, but be aware that most interviewing occurs after Chinese New Year (around late January\/early February) and also in July and August.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Thailand <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Publish and private K-12 schools in <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/jobs\/teach-english-in-thailand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thailand<\/a> tend to hire teachers the months preceding their semester start dates of October and May. Apply as early as possible to give you plenty of time for the sometimes lengthy hiring process.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Europe<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2592\" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Teaching_abroad_Italy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"573\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Teaching_abroad_Italy.jpg 573w, https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Teaching_abroad_Italy-480x269.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 573px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/teflonline-com-grad-joseph-teaching-english-in-italy-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Joseph, English teacher in Italy<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>European countries like <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\/onsite\/florence-italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\/onsite\/celta-barcelona-spain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/jobs\/teach-english-in-czech-republic\/\">Czech Republic<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/jobs\/teach-english-in-poland\/\">Poland<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/jobs\/teach-english-in-ukraine\/\">Ukraine<\/a>\u00a0typically want teachers to start in September and January, and do most of their recruiting in August and December.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also worth noting that recruitment for English summer camps can start as early as March, so if you\u2019d like to spend a summer working with kids in the French countryside, for example, apply early!<\/p>\n<h2>Middle East<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2252\" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/image007-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Jasmine, Teacher in Bahrain, with her students\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/teacher-in-bahrain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jasmine, English teacher in Bahrain<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While language schools in countries such as the<a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/jobs\/teach-english-in-the-uae\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> U.A.E<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/jobs\/teach-english-in-oman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oman<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/jobs\/teach-english-in-saudi-arabia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> can hire year-round, many jobs in the Middle East are in technical colleges and universities, which have August and September start dates.
