Chatbots, virtual assistants, and other artificial intelligence applications now absorb much of that workload. ESL educators use AI to boost productivity, streamline processes, and personalize students’ experiences. This article explains how you can use AI as your personal teaching assistant and shows practical ways to bring it into your classroom.

If you’re new to teaching, you’ll want to get initial training and qualification with a TEFL certificate. Personalize learning using AI-driven analytics

Most online learning platforms now run on AI-generated analytics that respond to each English student’s specific needs. Automated analysis of each learner’s performance makes assessing students and building customized courses far more efficient than before.

AI applications analyze those patterns for you instead of leaving you to review student grades and assessment results by hand, and they generate the information you need to identify each student’s specific strengths and the areas to target for improvement.

Bridge Corporate Language Training, for instance, uses AI-driven analytics to assess new students’ English levels. The Academic Director of Bridge Corporate Language Training explained the approach: “Now, we are using some placement tests that incorporate artificial intelligence. Their responses are adaptive, meaning if a student answers correctly, the next question is going to be a little bit harder.

If the student struggles, the next question is going to be easier. So, the software detects the student’s answers and is able to determine a set of questions that gauge the level of the student more effectively.”

They also explained how AI supports English language assessments: “First, the test answers are compared to a large corpus linguistics and a large database of users that have answered in a certain way in high-stakes exams and got a certain result. Compared against those answers, the AI tests can quickly determine the level of the student. This is the case for many of the placement tests that are being used these days.”

However, analytics help only when you act on them. Set aside a few minutes at the beginning or end of each week to read the platform’s report and pick one target topic to cover, rather than reviewing the data after the course ends. Keep in mind that these tools measure what learners can score. A student’s willingness to speak, tolerance for error, and motivation are not tracked, so take notes to fill that gap.

Bridge Corporate Language Training offers teachers access to generated data to personalize their Business English instruction to meet learners’ needs.

2. These apps identify error types such as grammar and spelling, and they give detailed, objective writing suggestions. They can also detect AI-written content, which helps you identify potential plagiarism faster.

Automated grading works best when you treat the output as a first draft. Teachers should read the comments, adjust the tone, and correct anything the tool scored against the wrong criterion before returning the paper to the learner. Check the school’s policy before you upload student work, since many institutions now require teachers to remove names and identifying details first.

Looking for ways to improve your ESL students’ reading skills? Use AI to generate activity ideas and create or enhance lesson plans

Teachers can spend less time searching the internet for engaging class activities and lesson plan ideas, and instead give AI assistants prompts to create lesson plans and activity ideas. You can also generate ideas that enhance current lesson plans with additional resources and activities.

Brazilian EFL teacher Matheus Nazario, for instance, has used AI tools for several years while running his own online teaching business. “I’ve used some AI apps for slide preparation, and AI tools such as Twee and Education Copilot for organizing tasks and lesson plans,” he shared. “They have helped me to see things differently, gather different ideas and suggestions, and make some tasks simpler or better tailored.”

AI-supported tools also help you personalize courses. You can use them to generate more content suggestions and to structure lesson plans around each student’s needs and interests.

Create your path to professional independence

Teacherpreneur Academy

Join the Academy

Class idea generators

AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini generate lesson plan ideas quickly, whether you need vocabulary, grammar, or a topic to bring to class. You can type, for instance, “What are some games for teaching [grammar topic] to [age group] students?” and the chatbot returns a list of activity ideas for your class.

Chatbots can also supply additional topic ideas and class discussion questions for conversation classes or speaking activities. You can ask the chatbot, for example, “What questions can I ask adult professionals about cultural differences in the workplace?”

In a time crunch? They produce lesson plan content or improve the lesson plans you already have. That content can include lesson objectives, materials, assessment techniques, and anything else you request in your prompt.

Magic Write, for instance, works from a simple typed prompt (e.g., “Generate a lesson plan about giving business presentations for adult English learners”). The lesson plan text then appears in the same document, and you can modify it as you see fit.

Some apps handle lesson prep in a more straightforward way. Tools like lessonplans.ai and Curipod, for instance, offer AI-assisted lesson planning as their core function. The AI algorithm analyzes the level of the target students, course requirements, and learning objectives, then generates a document containing the details of your lesson plan.

The quality of an AI lesson plan depends on the quality of your prompt, so save the prompts that produce good results and reuse them with small edits. Most generated plans also arrive without staging, timing, or anticipated problems. Your training fills those gaps, and the plan becomes usable once you sequence the activities for a specific group of students.

Pro Tip: Include the grade or age group of your students in every prompt. AI text-leveling tools now handle the first draft of that work in seconds, which makes authentic content accessible for a variety of classes.

Text levelers like Diffit and the CEFR tools in Twee rewrite a passage to a target level while holding the original meaning, then generate comprehension questions and a vocabulary list from the adapted version.

Level checkers tell you where a text actually sits before you adapt it. A student who can spot these errors has learned a lot of English.

AI has changed how English teachers work, and the change is evident. Teachers can see where each student stands, save time, generate authentic lessons, and assess in minutes. The tools produce material, but the teacher directs and decides what to create.

Start with one of these tips rather than all eight.
