{"id":33857,"date":"2024-09-28T14:39:18","date_gmt":"2024-09-28T20:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/?p=33857"},"modified":"2026-03-10T12:10:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T18:10:09","slug":"braz-tesol-event-florianopolis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/braz-tesol-event-florianopolis\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovative Strategies for Effective English Language Teaching: Highlights of BRAZ-TESOL SC\u2019s Event in Florianopolis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>\n<p>With an in-depth look at the meaning of \u201cinnovation\u201d at its core, BRAZ-TESOL\u2019s Santa Catarina Chapter recently brought together English language educators from the southern region of Brazil to the Sesc-Cacup\u00e9 Hotel in Florian\u00f3polis, Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event, themed \u201cInnovative Strategies for Effective English Teaching,\u201d featured a series of talks, workshops, and plenary sessions that delved into various topics such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/how-technology-is-revolutionizing-english-language-teaching\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teaching strategies using technology and multimedia<\/a> in the classroom, <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/benefits-professional-development-elt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professional development<\/a>, and new tools for <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/creative-thinking-esl-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">creative thinking<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1190\" height=\"669\" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-09-14-at-19.36.42-2-1190x669.jpeg\" alt=\"the BRAZ-TESOL Santa Catarina Chapter team presenting\" class=\"wp-image-33888\" style=\"width:550px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-09-14-at-19.36.42-2-980x551.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-09-14-at-19.36.42-2-480x270.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1190px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The BRAZ-TESOL Santa Catarina Chapter team<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Isadora Pereira Costa, the President of BRAZ-TESOL Santa Catarina, shared that with this year\u2019s event, the objectives for the chapter are being reached. She also added that although they had held other ELT events in the past, the chapter had been inactive until two years ago. So, after reactivating BRAZ-TESOL SC, they were able to organize this year\u2019s event. \u201cHaving such a big event after only two years has been amazing and invaluable,\u201d Costa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Costa also explained why this year\u2019s event focused on innovative strategies. \u201cIt was a topic chosen by the board. The first event was making a community. Then, it was making connections, and now we\u2019re trying to go further by talking about innovations in English language teaching and everything that entails.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_0355-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Bridge Program Advisor Krzl Nunes posing with fellow online English teachers during the event\" class=\"wp-image-33920\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:327px;height:550px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Bridge International Program Advisor Krzl Nu\u00f1es (middle) meeting fellow online English teachers during the event<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The event also gave attendees, who ranged from English teachers to school owners to book publishers, plenty of opportunities not only to earn from industry experts but also to network with each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flaviana Comin, an online English teacher from Florian\u00f3polis, shared that her BRAZ-TESOL event experience exceeded her expectations in terms of organization and the expertise of the attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It was in an excellent location, the speakers and attendees were really nice, and the organization was a highlight for me,&#8221; Comin said. &#8220;Also, getting together face to face with teachers and exchanging ideas can really be a fun and effective way to make new friends and colleagues and stay updated with different techniques and ways to improve students&#8217; learning in class.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/professional-development-for-esl-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read about nine ways to boost your resume with professional development for ESL teachers.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plenary talks: A spotlight on innovation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kicking off the round of sessions was a talk given by the BRAZ-TESOL SC team. The chapter\u2019s Coordinator and Social Media Manager, Rose Bard, first delved into the meaning of innovation, particularly in the area of teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her talk, Bard stressed that innovation also involves developing teaching skills and coming up with solutions or approaches with or without the use of technology to help learners. \u201cInnovation is not about tech at all,\u201d she pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"740\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Lucy-740x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Lucy Crichton giving educators tips on promoting deeper learning when teaching children\" class=\"wp-image-33890\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:314px;height:550px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Lucy Crichton gives educators tips on promoting deeper learning when teaching children<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, in her plenary session \u201cIs Faster Really Better?\u201d ELT young learner specialist and The Secret Garden English School Founder Lucy Crichton shared her insights and observations on English teaching to children based on her 25 years of experience. Focusing first on the impact of childhood experiences and how society&#8217;s beliefs and cultures deeply affect the meaning of childhood, Crichton\u2019s interactive session encouraged attendees to share how their childhood affected their current behaviors, attitudes, and habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, after emphasizing that children learn English through activities like playing, inventing, and exploring, she gave tips on how English teachers can promote deeper learning when teaching young learners, such as promoting joyful moments, assigning different tasks or chores, and doing hands-on activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-09-14-at-12.18.45-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"Tamira Gama with Isadora Costa of BRAZ-TESOL (left) and Bridge Program Advisor Krzl Nu\u00f1es\" class=\"wp-image-33892\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:300px;height:550px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Tamira Gama (middle) with Isadora Costa of BRAZ-TESOL (left) and Bridge International Program Advisor Krzl Nu\u00f1es (right)<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In another plenary session, teacher trainer and <em>Simplifica Ingles<\/em> online English school owner Tamira Gama talked about how to leverage market intelligence to plan, develop, and boost English language programs. During the workshop, Gama used the process of baking and selling cookies to explain how English language teachers can collect and analyze raw data to effectively assess students\u2019 performance in class, identify their needs, and keep track of their progress in English learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked why she chose to talk about the topic, Gama said, \u201cI\u2019m really into online teaching but I felt like talking about something I was doing, so I really wanted to talk about market intelligence. Sometimes we think it\u2019s far from what we do as teachers, but market intelligence is not rocket science. It\u2019s about analyzing data and making informed decisions. During the workshop, participants used SCAMPER to first come up with an existing lesson plan or activity. As songs can \u201cmake memories that last,\u201d he shared how to plan music-based lessons and how songs can be incorporated for various purposes in an English lesson, from using them as an ice breaker to expanding a topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having worked on various projects that made use of songs and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/ways-teachers-can-use-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">help of AI<\/a> (artificial intelligence), Rodriguez then demonstrated and encouraged attendees to participate in some sample English class activities that involved using songs to <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/strategies-teaching-grammar-english-language-learners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teach grammar<\/a> topics and vocabulary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the attendees, the talks and workshops they attended left them with a lot of takeaways useful for their English language instruction. Comin, for instance, shared that she enjoyed the session given by Gerson Borges, who presented tips and thoughts about teaching pronunciation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The literature he recommended was good, and I felt his tips could be implemented in my classes and really help my students,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/esl-songs-kids-teens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about how to incorporate ESL songs into the classroom<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bridge International Program Advisor presents on the power of continuing professional development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to sponsoring the BRAZ-TESOL SC event, Bridge also took part in sharing insights, tips, and resources with the ELT community. International Program Advisor Krzl Nu\u00f1es presented on embracing lifelong learning and <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/get-the-most-out-of-professional-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professional development<\/a> as an English teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the session, Nu\u00f1es underscored how ELT professionals can benefit from becoming lifelong learners by pursuing <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/expert-series-webinars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professional development<\/a>.
