{"id":34212,"date":"2024-10-14T06:35:26","date_gmt":"2024-10-14T12:35:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/?p=34212"},"modified":"2024-10-30T06:29:12","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T12:29:12","slug":"panama-tesol-convention-2024-highlights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/panama-tesol-convention-2024-highlights\/","title":{"rendered":"Supporting ELT Educators with Innovations in Language Instruction: Highlights of the 2024 Panama TESOL Convention"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>\n<p>From harnessing the power of <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/ways-teachers-can-use-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI in teaching<\/a> to teacher entrepreneurship to novel materials and <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/english-language-learning-methodologies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teaching methodologies<\/a>, Panama TESOL sparked a wave of innovation at the fourth Panama TESOL Convention, held from September 23rd to 28th, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The online and in-person event, &#8220;Innovations in Language Teaching: A Bridge to Empowerment,&#8221; served as a hub of fresh ideas and inspiration, aiming to transform the English classroom and empower educators worldwide. Various ELT experts shared their insights, tips, and resources on topics such as using <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/tools-for-teaching-engish-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">innovative digital tools<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/online-teaching-best-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online teaching best practices<\/a>, and recommended approaches to language teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zuleika Zulema Zapateiro, First Vice President of Panama TESOL, explained that this year\u2019s theme was chosen to serve as &#8220;a bridge connecting speakers with participants, offering a day of valuable sessions and networking for the teaching community.&#8221; She added that while all the sessions captured the attendees&#8217; interest, those focused on technology attracted the largest audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zapateiro shared that for the past three years, Panama TESOL conventions have taken place virtually for four days, followed by one in-person day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think participants liked this format because it allowed participants from different provinces and countries to participate,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It was a challenge moving from the city to the province, logistics, helping hands, etc., but we accomplished the goal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/how-technology-is-revolutionizing-english-language-teaching\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read about the ways technology is revolutionizing English language teaching.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Groundbreaking strategies for incorporating AI and multimedia into the ESL classroom <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many sessions at the convention introduced fresh perspectives on integrating technology and mixed resources into the English classroom, highlighting various ways AI-driven tools can enhance student learning outcomes and boost classroom participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1190\" height=\"769\" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Panama-TESOL-Simple-Games-1190x769.jpg\" alt=\"a slide in Dr. Morelo's presentation showing simple text-based games\" class=\"wp-image-34280\" style=\"width:550px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Panama-TESOL-Simple-Games-980x633.jpg 980w, https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Panama-TESOL-Simple-Games-480x310.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1190px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Dr. Doris Molero<\/em> <em>showed some text-based games that can be played on AI-run platforms<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During her session, Roleplaying with AI: A Game-Based Approach to Language Learning, university professor and instructional technology specialist Dr. Doris Molero talked about how English teachers can interact or \u201crole-play\u201d with AI for language practice, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/personalize-business-english-teaching-with-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hyper-personalize English teaching<\/a> with AI. After asking about the audience\u2019s experience with using AI, Molero shared how teachers can evaluate the effectiveness of role-playing with AI for catering to students\u2019 goals and needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She then outlined several ways to role-play with AI, including interactive storytelling, skills development, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/including-interactive-games-esl-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interactive gaming<\/a>. She also gave examples of simple text-based games that English teachers can develop with the help of AI-run apps like ChatGPT and how to use various types of prompts for generating text-based games on the ChatGPT platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLearning a language is like opening a door to a whole new world. She also gave tips on how aspiring independent English teachers can set themselves up for success through strategies like choosing their niche and designing their product offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, this year\u2019s Panama TESOL Convention brought the English teaching community together and empowered educators with cutting-edge insights.
