The Ultimate Checklist for Choosing the Right Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With so many choices out there for <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TEFL certification<\/a>, it can be frustrating trying to weed through the different options and choose the right course for your plans to teach English. You\u2019ve likely been warned to beware of fly-by-night course providers and to make sure you choose a reputable course. But, if you\u2019re new to teaching English, how can you determine which TEFL courses are legitimate?&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing what to look for in a teacher training course is key! To help, we offer <strong>the ultimate TEFL\/TESOL course checklist.<\/strong> Does the course you&#8217;re considering meet these criteria?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>1. Can you verify that the course is accredited?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i><\/i><\/b><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may be hard to understand the importance of accreditation since there is no single accrediting body for all TEFL\/TESOL courses and in fact, not all courses are accredited! Adding to your confusion, you may not have heard of the accrediting bodies you do find in your TEFL research. Yet, <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/selecting-accredited-tefl-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accreditation is still very important<\/a>!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Why is accreditation important for establishing legit TEFL online courses?&nbsp;<\/b><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because accreditation lets you, the consumer, know that a professional, outside body has reviewed the in-person or <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/online-tefl-certification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online TEFL course<\/a> and certified that it meets a set of academic standards. You should be able to go to the accrediting body\u2019s website to read about those standards and verify that the course you\u2019re considering is listed there.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accreditation also lets schools you apply to know that you didn&#8217;t just take any TEFL certification course; you took a high-quality, verified training course and earned a certificate that is internationally accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Avoiding accreditation scams<\/b><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing that&#8217;s vital is to go beyond just checking that a provider is accredited \u2013 and to actually make sure that the accrediting body is also reputable. This means that the accrediting institution is widely recognized and that it\u2019s not otherwise affiliated with the same provider administering the TEFL course. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some sneaky companies own both the TEFL course institution and the so-called accrediting body, making the accreditation a sham. In order to see through this type of scam, check the accrediting body\u2019s reputation and see if any government or top-quality educational institutions recognize it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5488\" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/ACCET_image.jpg\" alt=\"ACCET accreditation \" width=\"222\" height=\"222\"><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bridge accreditation<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bridge is accredited by two trusted, outside bodies. The first is U.S.-based&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/course-accreditation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACCET<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training, which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Is the course provider well established?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When deciding which TEFL courses are legitimate, you\u2019ll want to find a provider who\u2019s honest, experienced, and genuinely dedicated to providing quality teacher training. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check the provider&#8217;s history and professional affiliations<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To determine this, one of the very first things to research is how long a TEFL course provider has been in the business and with whom they are affiliated. Check the institution\u2019s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/our-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">About&#8221; page<\/a> for information on when and how they were founded and research whether they have partnerships with other reputable institutions, such as universities.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Bridge has been in the international language industry <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/our-story\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for over 30 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and began as a provider of English instruction in South America. Is the TEFL course at least 100 hours?&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"621\" height=\"801\" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-07-at-4.48.34-PM.png\" alt=\"BridgeTEFL certificate \" class=\"wp-image-5489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-07-at-4.48.34-PM.png 621w, https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-07-at-4.48.34-PM-480x619.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 621px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When researching TEFL course options, you&#8217;ll soon see that they are delineated in hours, and many providers offer a range of TEFL course options, from 40 to around 150 hours.&nbsp;Usually, when teaching jobs require applicants to have a \u201cTEFL certification,\u201d what they mean is that your certificate should meet the (unwritten) international standard of 100+ hours of training.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Why does the course need to be at least 100 hours?&nbsp;<\/b><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most employers consider courses of at least 100 hours comprehensive enough training, on average, to adequately prepare teachers for the classroom. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that a TEFL course is fewer than 100 hours doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s not a legitimate course, as long as the provider offers the option to upgrade and add more hours anytime.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Will the course actually take 100 hours to complete?<\/b><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just because a course is listed as 100 hours doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that it will take you that long to complete. Most courses are self-paced, and if you\u2019re a really fast learner you may be able to complete a course quickly. However, the important thing is that the course is valued at 100 hours of study and will be listed as such on your certificate.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Updating your BridgeTEFL certificate<\/b><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bridge students and graduates can always upgrade their TEFL certification to add more hours or <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\/specialized\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">specializations<\/a> and make themselves more marketable to worldwide employers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/about-the-certificate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BridgeTEFL certificates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;automatically update in the online portal to display the total number of hours a student has completed, including general TEFL training, upgrades, and specializations. Are the course tutors qualified?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s strongly recommended that you choose an online TEFL course that includes a personal tutor who will review your coursework, since getting feedback on lesson plans is a big part of your development as a teacher.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For any TEFL course you\u2019re considering, you should be able to find the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/tutors-and-instructors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bios of the available tutors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;on the provider\u2019s website so that you can get a sense of their qualifications and experience before you sign up. Ideally, tutors should have taught abroad themselves and hold at least a bachelor\u2019s degree (and preferably a master\u2019s) in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), English, or education.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>5. Is the course price so low you can\u2019t believe it?&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then don\u2019t! You might be tempted to buy an online TEFL course on one of those online coupon sites where you can find deep discounts that seem too good to be true. However, this is ill-advised.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, take a comprehensive, fully-accredited TEFL course that teaches you how to plan lessons, refreshes your memory on English grammar (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what\u2019s a gerund, again?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and offers tutor feedback on your work. When you\u2019re standing in front of your first class full of eager English students, you\u2019ll be glad you did!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>6. Luckily, you can do this to find legit online TEFL courses, too!&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trustpilot.com\/review\/www.bridge.edu?utm_medium=trustbox&amp;utm_source=Slider\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-known site like Trustpilot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where customers can rate TEFL courses and leave detailed reviews about their experiences. Filter reviews by rating and see the overall average score for each company. Trustpilot also calculates a company\u2019s \u201cTrustScore\u201d using a carefully designed algorithm that takes into account the frequency of reviews, the time span of the reviews (more recent reviews are more weighted), the reviews themselves, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another great way to find out which TEFL courses are legitimate is to check out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/category\/bridgetefl-alumni\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where the alumni are teaching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If alumni go on to find great TEFL jobs with reputable schools and language institutes, then you know that the course is legitimate. If there\u2019s absolutely no information on alumni, then you can bet the course isn\u2019t all it appears to be at first glance.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>7. Can your TEFL\/TESOL certification be easily verified by employers?&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a certificate in-hand to offer employers is impressive, but how much information can employers verify?
