Seven years ago, he decided to make a career switch from working as a hotel clerk to an English teacher in Rio de Janeiro, after obtaining his <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/online-tefl-certification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online TEFL certification<\/a> from Bridge. He tells us more about his life\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/jobs\/teach-english-in-brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teaching English in Brazil<\/a>, one of South America\u2019s most culturally diverse countries<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why did you decide to get TEFL certified\u00a0and how did you choose the <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\/online\/120-hour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">120-Hour BridgeTEFL Master Certificate course<\/a>?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A lot of the higher-end schools require an international teaching certificate, so I decided to <a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/courses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">get TEFL certified<\/a>. I chose Bridge because a friend of mine recommended it. That\u2019s why I decided to complete the TEFL course here.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5992\" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Paul-Flores-Brazil-2.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Flores, English Teacher in Brazil, with a student\" width=\"456\" height=\"608\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>How did you decide on your teaching location<\/strong><strong> and h<\/strong><strong>ow did you get your TEFL job?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It was based on my personal dream to live in Rio de Janeiro. Also, while I was here, I decided that I needed a career change. I found my job through a fundraiser I attended. The people there were looking to expand to a new <em>favela<\/em>\u00a0and were seeking a local teacher, so we kind of clicked.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/teaching-english-abroad\/country-guides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Download the free BridgeTEFL Country Guide: Brazil<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Can you tell us about your current teaching job in Rio?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I work for an NGO called Kids Learning with Love. Its focus is to teach English in Rio\u2019s <em>favelas. <\/em>I\u2019m teaching a mix of 7 to 65-year-old students with different educational backgrounds as well as different levels of English.\u00a0I usually teach seven classes per day, which are divided into age groups. The methodology used is customized, focusing on the students\u2019 strengths and needs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5991 \" src=\"https:\/\/bridge.edu\/tefl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Paul-Flores-Brazil-1-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Flores, English Teacher in Brazil, in class\" width=\"473\" height=\"591\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Please tell us about a\u00a0memorable experience you&#8217;ve had teaching abroad in Brazil.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The most memorable experience I had was mentoring a student so he could get a sports scholarship abroad. In the beginning, he was shy and scared of speaking out loud.
