  • Admission Requirements

    No previous teaching experience is required to take the IDELT, but all applicants must meet the following qualifications:

    • Be at least 18 years old for courses in the USA; 20 years old for courses in South America
    • Hold at least a high school diploma or the equivalent
    • Be a native English speaker or have near-native English proficiency (meaning a documented C1 English level or higher, based on the Common European Framework, or CEFR)
    • Be willing and able to commit to the demands of the course, such as an 8-hour per day schedule as well as a significant amount of homework outside class
    • Successfully complete a written pre-course task and pre-course interview.
  • Course Content

    The IDELT includes the following course components:

    • A minimum of 6 hours of practice teaching with real language students.
    • Guidance throughout the course from experienced trainers who will observe and assess your practice teaching sessions.
    • Live (and video) observations of professional English teachers.
    • Instruction and practice in teaching the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) and the language systems (vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar).
    • An introduction to classroom management, including theory and practice with issues such as error correction and giving instructions.
    • Instruction and practice in preparing formal classroom lesson plans.
    • An introduction to language awareness and specific training in how to teach English grammar.
    • An introduction to using multimedia in the classroom, such as online materials, DVDs, and songs.
    • An introduction to Teaching Business English and Teaching English to Young Learners.
    • An overview of intercultural relations and how culture can affect language acquisition.
    • Professional development support and assistance finding teaching jobs.
    Grammar Advisor

    Also included with your IDELT course is a one-year subscription to Grammar Advisor, a comprehensive, interactive English grammar refresher course and teaching reference.  

  • Assignments/Assessment

    To meet the IDELT training and certification requirements, trainees must:

    • Maintain 100% course attendance and participation in all scheduled activities and daily assignments.
    • Teach classes for a minimum of 6 assessed hours.
    • Record and report feedback for all teaching practice classes for self and peer lessons.
    • Participate in directed observations of experienced TEFL teachers.
    • Evaluate the needs of teaching practice students to plan creative and efficient lessons to meet those needs.
    • Write and submit lesson plans based upon material appropriate for their class level.
    • Complete 5 written assignments.
    • Submit a portfolio of all coursework.
    Assessment

    There are 5 required components of assessment that combine to make up 100% of the trainee’s total grade (percentage breakdown below). IDELT trainees will receive grades for both on-going and final assessment in the following areas:

    1. Participation in Input Sessions (15%) – For the participation part of their grade, in this intensive course, trainees are expected to take part in classroom discussions, keep up on their reading assignments, and complete classroom and self-study tasks as they arise.
    2. Lesson planning (15%) – During the course, each trainee will prepare lesson plans that will be presented during practice teaching sessions.
    3. Teaching Practice (40%) – Trainees will deliver their lesson plans via a minimum of 6 hours of practice teaching lessons with real students. These practice teaching sessions are observed both by trainers and fellow trainees.
    4. Feedback (10%) – Trainees will provide thoughtful self-observation of their own practice teaching sessions as well as feedback on peers’ sessions.
    5. Written Assignments (20%) – There are 5 graded written assignments in the IDELT. Topics for these papers include: Grammar/Language-Related Tasks, Language Skills-Related Tasks, and Professional Development Tasks.

    Evaluation and Final Report

    Upon completion of the IDELT, BridgeTEFL will issue trainees a final report detailing what was covered during the course and the trainees’ overall performance. This report can be included as a complement to the resume and cover letter when applying for teaching jobs.

FAQs

  • Can I take this course if I’m not a native English speaker?

    Yes! Non-native English-speaking trainees must demonstrate English proficiency at a C1 English level or higher, based on the Common European Framework (CEFR) in order to be accepted into the IDELT. This level may be demonstrated with current English proficiency test results (such as from the TOEFL, IELTS or TOEIC) or by taking the Bridge Online Language Test (BOLT) prior to acceptance.

  • Do I need previous teaching experience to take this course?

    No, you don’t. While teaching experience can be helpful, anyone who meets the course requirements and has a strong desire to teach English to speakers of other languages is eligible and welcome to take the IDELT.

  • What are the requirements to take this course?

    To take the IDELT, you must be 18 years or older with at least a high school diploma or the equivalent for our Denver course, and 19 years or older for our courses in South America. We require applicants to successfully complete a written pre-course task and pre-course interview prior to course acceptance. If you are not a native English speaker, you must demonstrate English proficiency at a minimum of a C1 level (according to the Common European Framework (CEFR), or have earned the equivalent to an IELTS test score of 7.0.

  • Do I have to purchase a textbook?

    Yes. For all three IDELT course locations, there is a required textbook called Learning Teaching, by James Scrivener and a required grammar reference book (the title of the grammar reference varies by location). You will be given instructions by a Bridge Admissions Advisor on the books you need and how to purchase them once you are registered.

  • What is the admissions process for the IDELT?

    At the time of enrollment, all applicants will pay a course deposit. This deposit is non-refundable, except in the event that you are not accepted to the course.

    You will then be required to complete a pre-course task, which is a written exercise consisting of grammar and teaching questions (you may reference outside resources to complete the task) and a short, written task.

    When an IDELT administrator has received your task, he or she will be in contact with you via email within two weeks to set up a phone interview. In the interview, your task will be reviewed and you will be asked questions about your reasons for taking the IDELT course and related topics. Final acceptance into the course will be decided after the interview.

    (Please note, if English is not your first language, you will also be required to demonstrate English proficiency at a C1 English level or higher, based on the Common European Framework (CEFR). This level may be demonstrated with current English proficiency test results (such as from the TOEFL, IELTS or TOEIC) or by taking the Bridge Online Language Test (BOLT) prior to acceptance.)

  • What is the daily schedule of the IDELT?

    The IDELT is a very intensive course. The daily schedule normally runs from 9:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. and each day is divided into two parts. In the mornings, you will attend “input sessions,” in which the trainers facilitate workshops on language, methodology, theory, techniques, etc. You will have an hour lunch break mid-day. In the afternoons, there will be time for lesson planning and preparation, followed by teaching practice.

  • Do I have to complete any assignments?

    Yes. In addition to participating in daily Input Sessions (learning sessions led by the instructor), lesson planning, and practice teaching, you will also complete 5 graded written assignments in the IDELT. Assignment topics include Grammar/Language-Related Tasks, Language Skills-Related Tasks, and Professional Development Tasks, and these 5 assignments combine to make up 20% of your total grade.

  • Does the course include a teaching practicum?

    Yes. The IDELT provides trainees with the opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience. Each trainee will practice teach a minimum of 6 hours of practice lessons with real students. These practice teaching sessions are observed both by trainers and fellow trainees with detailed feedback provided.

  • Can I work or go to school while I take this course?

    It is not recommended that trainees have other obligations during the 4-week IDELT course. The IDELT is a very intensive training with a demanding full-time schedule and additional time required after class for reading, researching, planning lessons and completing homework and written assignments.

  • What is the difference between this course and the Cambridge CELTA?

    The Bridge IDELT and the Cambridge CELTA are both accredited, internationally recognized TEFL/TESOL courses that prepare you for teaching positions worldwide. These courses were developed by different organizations, Bridge in the U.S. and Cambridge in the U.K., so they vary slightly in structure and content but are considered equivalent certifications.

    The reason CELTA tuition is higher than IDELT tuition is that CELTA is a Cambridge English (U.K.) course offered at authorized training centers around the world. Centers that receive this authorization pay royalty fees to Cambridge, which affects the course cost. The Bridge IDELT, on the other hand, is a Bridge proprietary course, so no additional fees are required, making tuition lower.

  • Can I earn university credit for this course?

    In the USA, the IDELT program has been approved by ACCET (Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training) and is recommended for 6 graduate-level credits as an elective or as a teaching practicum in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at over 1,500 universities by National CCRS (College Credit Recommendation Service).

  • How will I receive my certificate?

    Upon successful completion of the IDELT, your hard copy, 140- hour certificate will be mailed to you, featuring the embossed Bridge seal, unique certificate number, and administrator’s signature.
