Algerian teachers prefer blended TEFL/TESOL training

In March of 2019, Pathways Training Center (formerly Total Learning School), in Algeria, partnered with Bridge to become a Bridge Authorized Training Center in order to provide teachers access to formal, high-quality training. Pathways Training Center has found that teachers in Algeria prefer a blended approach to learning (one that involves both online and in-person elements), and they have received ample positive feedback from trainees who have enrolled in their partner course with Bridge. They look forward to expanding their partnership with Bridge and opening more centers across Algeria in the future.

Challenge

A Need for More Teacher Training Support in Algeria

Pathways Training Center is a private institution in Algeria that offers accredited professional training and language courses for personal and professional development.

As Aziza El Kolei, Director of Pathways Training Center, notes, “English has been gaining more and more ground in the country to the point that many think it might replace French (the second language in Algeria) in the near future.”

She explains that teachers in Algeria are eager to receive more training and support before being placed in the classroom and that, “both teachers and learners are often struggling with the old methods of teaching, where lessons are mostly lectures or grammar focused.”

To remedy this, Pathways Training Center aims to provide teachers with training in the latest and most innovative teaching methods and strategies.

Solution

Making Training More Accessible

Despite the need for teacher training, Aziza found that many educators in Algeria were unable to attend intensive training sessions due to time commitment and travel restraints.

The solution came in the form of a partnership with Bridge, which now delivers the 120-hour Master Certificate online course material to Pathways Training Center. The center then carries out the remaining 20 hours of in-person workshops. Upon successful completion of this blended program, trainees receive a co-branded TEFL/TESOL certificate.

This blended program has made it easier for teachers to participate in training, and Aziza says, “We have been receiving amazing feedback about how the course (online + in-person) helped increase the trainees’ confidence in their teaching knowledge and skills, as well as provided them with different resources to use in their classrooms.”

Results

Looking to the Future

Aziza says that Pathways Training Center plans to continue their partnership with Bridge for the foreseeable future, noting, “All of our trainees recommended our course to their colleagues, and half of our students come through the word of mouth of our participants.”

100% have said that the certification helped them improve as an English teacher

Of the trainees who have participated in the course, 100% have said that the certification helped them improve as an English teacher, and Aziza shares that trainees have been excited and motivated to return to their classrooms and apply the knowledge they’ve learned in the course.

Due to the success of the program, Aziza intends to expand Pathways Training Center’s reach to other regions in Algeria by offering the course in schools and training centers across the country.

“I had the opportunity to participate in the Blended TESOL course offered by Pathways Training Center and it was a very pleasant experience. Our trainer Aziza was just amazing both on a personal and professional level…I’d definitely come back for future potential training, and I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for an optimal training experience!”
