Subject knowledge is essential to effective English language teaching, but it is not always explored explicitly in teacher development. This webinar invites teacher educators to examine what subject knowledge means in ELT beyond general language proficiency, including grammar, phonology, discourse, genre, vocabulary and assessment literacy. Participants will consider how these areas influence teachers’ planning, explanations, feedback, assessment and responses to learners’ needs.
Drawing on research and practice in teacher education, the webinar will encourage participants to reflect on how they currently support teachers’ subject knowledge development and where this support could become more intentional, sustainable and impactful. Rather than seeing subject knowledge as something teachers either have or lack, the session presents it as an essential area of professional learning that continues throughout a teacher’s career.
