IATEFL – Learning Strategy Theory and Materials Design

An IATEFL monthly webinar presented by Kirstie Jackson Wilms

This session will aim in to raise awareness of language learning strategies and how these offer an alternative to the learning style model.

Participants will explore the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire and look at ways its results can be analysed and implemented in the classroom in terms of adapting interaction patterns or existing activities in order to support or stretch their learners’ strategy use. The second part of the session will aim to equip participants to write or adapt their own materials bearing learning strategy theory in mind, and will close with a look at the limitations of the model for different learner levels.

Using learning strategy theory allows teachers to analyse materials from a different angle and adapt these to suit a range of different learners and contexts. The model can be applied to published and self-made materials in both virtual and classroom settings, and is appropriate for use in all cultures.
