In this interview, Tania Kyrylenko, founder of esl.laboratory, shares how providing high-quality lesson plans supports the global community of English language teachers and enhances student learning outcomes. Learn about the range of ready-to-use ELT lessons and resources offered by esl.laboratory and how they can support your ESL teaching.

1. What is esl.laboratory’s mission?

The mission of esl.laboratory is to empower English teachers by providing high-quality, ready-to-use lesson plans that save time and ensure student progress. We are dedicated to combining effective teaching methodologies with engaging content, making it easier for teachers to deliver lessons that are not only educational but also enjoyable for students. Our goal is to support continuous learning and to help students achieve tangible progress in their English language skills through consistent and well-structured practice.

2. When and why was the company founded?

esl.laboratory was founded about two years ago with a clear vision: to address the gap in the market for comprehensive, easy-to-use lesson plans that genuinely enhance student learning outcomes. As an experienced ESL teacher, I noticed that while there were plenty of resources available, many lacked the depth and structure needed to facilitate real progress. I wanted to create resources that would not only save teachers time but also be rooted in effective methodology, ensuring that students could build on their knowledge incrementally and meaningfully.

3. Can you tell us about your background?

I hold a master’s degree in English translation but discovered that my true passion lies in teaching and working with people. I’m CELTA-certified and have over five years of experience, primarily teaching adults and specializing in Business English.

4. Can you summarize what esl.laboratory offers?

At esl.laboratory, we don’t just sell lesson plans – we offer a pathway to your students’ continuous and qualitative progress in English. Our materials are designed to go beyond the initial introduction of vocabulary or grammar; they focus on the repetition and additional practice necessary for true comprehension and mastery. We understand that learning a language is a process, and our resources are tailored to reinforce learning through engaging and practical activities.

5. What sets esl.laboratory lesson plans and materials apart?

At esl.laboratory, we offer more than just lesson plans – we provide a comprehensive suite of additional materials to enhance your teaching experience. Each lesson plan is accompanied by Quizlet sets with target vocabulary, ensuring that students can easily review and reinforce key terms. We also include homework assignments with four additional exercises designed to practice both grammar and vocabulary.

To help consolidate learning, we offer revision activities that teachers can use to revisit new material. For those teaching online, we provide adaptable options like Miro board and Jamboard, making our resources versatile and effective for both in-person and virtual classrooms. Our commitment to quality and convenience makes our materials stand out, ensuring that your students not only learn but also retain and apply what they’ve learned.

6. Can you give us some examples of when teachers or schools used your lesson plans and how they made a difference?

We love it when teachers share videos of their lessons using our plans – it’s amazing to see students fully engaged and confidently using the target language! One memorable example is when a teacher sent us a student’s completed homework. The task was to write a comment on the lesson topic, and the student used 90 percent of the target vocabulary correctly. It was clear they had really grasped the material, which means we achieved our goal! It’s a fantastic feeling, and we always encourage our users to share their students’ progress with us.

This is exactly why we do what we do: to help students excel in English by making it easier for teachers to deliver effective, impactful lessons.

7. Who designs the lesson plans?

All the lesson plans at esl.laboratory are designed by me, the founder, a CELTA-certified ESL teacher. This project is a reflection of my passion for teaching and my belief in the power of effective methodology. I work closely with a team of talented teachers who share my vision and contribute their expertise to create additional materials that complement each lesson plan. Together, we ensure that every plan is not only educationally sound but also engaging and relevant to today’s learners.

8. What are your most popular lesson plans and products?

Teachers particularly love our A1-A2 lesson plans because they’re based on authentic materials – a rarity for elementary-level students. This approach not only makes the learning experience more engaging but also helps students connect with real-world English from the very beginning. Another popular category is our Business English lesson plans. Teachers appreciate these classes for their matter-of-fact approach, delivering practical, real-world language skills that students can immediately apply in professional settings.

9. Do you have a personal favorite lesson plan on the site?

Choosing a favorite lesson plan is like choosing who you love more: your mom or dad! So, I can’t say which lesson plan is my favorite, but I’m extremely proud of our psychology and communication categories. I don’t often see lesson plans covering these topics on other resources, and I believe it’s extremely important to introduce them in lesson plans and equip students with the language necessary to talk about them.

10. What’s next for esl.laboratory?

There are exciting developments on the horizon for esl.laboratory! In addition to adding new lesson plans every month, we’re working on creating placement and progress tests to better track student development. We’re also focused on adding more personalization features to help teachers choose the most suitable lesson plans for their students’ needs. Additionally, we’re looking to foster a close-knit community among our users, creating a space where teachers can share ideas, resources, and support.
