Teaching English in the Caribbean: Read This Before You Decide!

Having just returned from Playa del Carmen, Mexico, I got a firsthand look at the CELTA training center there on the Caribbean Coast, and also got to know the town of Playa during my week-long visit. After that experience, I’m here to warn you, this may not be the place for you if you are considering teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). Consider these points before you decide:

1. The school is just two blocks from the beach.

Sand, surf and sunshine-haters beware. The TEFL center in the town of Playa del Carmen is a mere two blocks from the kind of soft, white sand and turquoise waters that can lead to behavior like sunbathing, swimming and even sipping piña coladas.

2. You’ll have great job prospects right there at the beach.

Even worse for beach haters, immediately after completing your course you will be faced with an abundance of teaching job prospects right there in Playa del Carmen, or in surrounding areas, like Cancun. So if you would rather teach English in a bustling, landlocked big city, rather than paradise, I suggest you consider other locations.

3. You will learn Spanish there, too.

Beware– in Playa del Carmen, you run the risk of becoming bilingual! If you are proudly mono-lingual, this is not the place for you. The training center in Playa not only offers fun and affordable Spanish classes, but those classes have been known to lead to social functions, excursions and general interaction with the rich Mexican culture.

4. The Cambridge CELTA is the most recognized course in the world.

Aside from getting certified in paradise, you should also keep in mind you will also be earning the world-renowned Cambridge CELTA certificate. If you are not interested in getting the very best, highest paid teaching jobs in Mexico and worldwide, you definitely want to avoid taking the CELTA in Mexico.

So consider yourself warned; Playa del Carmen is a  a sun-soaked, fun-filled TEFL destination, and getting CELTA-certified here will lead to amazing job opportunities at the beach and beyond. Take my advice and think it over!
