International Diploma in English Language Teaching (IDELT – Online)

  • Course Requirements

    In order to take this course you must be at least 18 years old with a minimum of a high school diploma or the equivalent.

    If you are not a native English speaker, you will be expected to show proof of English fluency at a C1 level or higher, according to the Common European Framework, upon enrollment. Your English level must be verified with the results of a recently taken English proficiency test (showing the equivalent to an IELTS test score of at least 7.0) or via an English proficiency test administered by Bridge.

    You will also be required to purchase a textbook for the IDELT – Online: The Practice of English Language Teaching, by Jeremy Harmer (5th edition, with DVD). This textbook can be ordered online and shipped worldwide by most major book distribution companies.

  • Course Outline

    The 150-hour IDELT Online is a graduate-level reading and discussion-based online TEFL/TESOL certification course, presenting effective methods for teaching English to adult speakers of other languages.

    While the curriculum is mainly focused on methodology, other aspects of English language teaching, such as applicable theories in linguistics and education, are also addressed. Additionally, students observe English teachers in action on the textbook’s accompanying DVD and online, and reflect on these current best-practice models.

    The course follows a 12-week schedule, guided by the instructor. Assignments (such as quizzes and written tasks) are due on a weekly basis, allowing for flexibility for students with a busy schedule.

    Throughout the IDELT – Online course, you will:

    • Read, view, analyze, and draw inferences from the concepts found in the textbook, on the accompanying DVD, and in the recommended outside resources (links provided).
    • Complete weekly reading comprehension quizzes within the online course.
    • Contribute to weekly online discussion forums regarding the concepts found in course materials.
    • Produce a written assignment or group project demonstrating understanding of the principles of effective, current methodology for teaching English to adult speakers of other languages.

    Your overall grade for the course will be based on the successful and timely completion of quizzes, forum discussions, and a final paper or group project, and will be calculated as follows:

    Weekly reading comprehension quizzes 12%
    Weekly written analysis and discussion 48%
    Writing Assignment or Group project 16%
    Final paper 24%

  • University Credit

    Qualified enrollees (who are at least in their junior year of university in good standing and with a 3.0 GPA) have the option of concurrently taking the IDELT – Online for 3 graduate level credits from the University of Northern Colorado. To take the IDELT – Online for university credit, simply choose a start date that is eligible (all except those marked with an asterisk) and upon registration, check the box to indicate you would like to earn credit. A Bridge advisor will then assist you with the process of registering with the university (please note the university registration fee is $450). These credits may be applied to a UNC program or transferred to another university (per that university’s credit transfer policies).

    Students who are enrolled or planning to enroll in the Adult and Higher Education Master's Degree program from Texas A&M University - Texarkana can apply this course for credit through the university.     • Is the course self-paced?

      The course is 12 weeks long, and trainees must work through the course as a group, completing assignments weekly. However, the course provides flexibility during the week to access the course and complete assignments when it is convenient for you.

    • Do I have to purchase a textbook?

      Yes. There is a required textbook for the IDELT Online, which is called The Practice of English Language Teaching, by Jeremy Harmer (5th edition, with DVD). The textbook can be ordered online and shipped worldwide by most major book distribution companies.

    • Do I have to complete any assignments?

      Yes. There are readings and forum postings required each week, as well as weekly comprehension quizzes. You’ll also complete two written assignments as part of the course, and the master’s-level instructor provides guidance and feedback on all written work.

    • Who can take this course?

      To take the IDELT – Online you must be 18 years or older with at least a high school diploma or the equivalent. If you are not a native English speaker, you must demonstrate English proficiency at a minimum of a C1 level (according to the Common European Framework (CEFR), or have earned the equivalent to an IELTS test score of 7.0.

    • What are the technical requirements for the course?

      The IDELT Online is accessed and delivered online, so you must have access to the Internet, including the ability to watch online videos using Adobe Flash Player. The IDELT – Online may be completed on any device, including a desktop computer, laptop computer, tablet or smartphone.

    • Can I earn university credit for this course?

      Yes! For an additional $450 (university registration fee), you may earn 3 graduate credits and a transcript from the University of Northern Colorado (depending on the course date). If you are enrolled or planning to enroll in the Adult and Higher Education master's degree from Texas A&M University – Texarkana, you will be able to apply this course for credit to the program.     • Does the course include a teaching practicum?

      A practicum is not included, but you may add one by registering for the 20-hour Specialized Certificate: Guided Teaching Practicum. This course provides the framework for trainees to gain hands-on experience in a real ESL classroom and meet the requirements of more teaching jobs

    • How will I receive my certificate?

      You can download, save, and print your certificate from the online platform free of charge, once the instructor has posted final grades.     • Can I earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for this course?

Ann Leonard has a B.A. in Germanic Studies and an M.A. in TESOL and has been in the field of adult language education since 1991. Ann is also an instructor for the graduate-level, online TESOL course, the Bridge International Diploma in English Language Teaching (IDELT Online).

Terry Mclean earned her undergraduate degree in Business from Brenau College, and later completed a Masters in Education in ESL from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She has over 15 years’ experience teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), both in the U.S. and Europe. She is currently studying for her Doctorate in Education in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Phoenix.
